I think they are important, because heterozygotes are able to carry a recessive gene, but not bring about the effects of this gene expression. Then recessive genes can be unless expressly delegated by the parents by mating. If both parents are heterozygous mate, 1 / 4 of their children should display the recessive phenotype, even if neither parent has.
